ためワザは、ワザを入力してから条件を満たしている間ファイターがそのワザの力を溜め続け、解放するとその溜めた時間に応じて性質が変化するワザ。スマブラシリーズの全てに存在する。溜めたワザは威力の増加だけでなく、攻撃範囲が大きくなったり飛び道具の飛距離が延びるなどの効果を得る。溜めワザはスマッシュホールド以外は全て必殺ワザである。
溜めワザにはボタンを押しっぱなしで溜めるものと、ワザを入力すると同時に溜めはじめるワザの2種類がある。前者は溜め中にボタンを放すと攻撃を繰り出し、後者は溜め中に必殺ワザボタンを押すと攻撃を繰り出す。
溜めワザの中には追加入力によって溜め動作を中断することができるものがある。それらの中には溜めた量を保持することができるものが多い。溜めた量を保持できる溜めワザは、最大まで溜まったときにも溜め動作が自動で中断され、全身が点滅する状態になる。この状態で再度ワザを入力すると、溜め動作はせずに最大まで溜まった攻撃を繰り出す。
溜めを中断するには、空中ではシールドボタンで中断でき、地上ではそれに加えて左右の方向入力でも中断できる。中断の際はどちらも同時に緊急回避を行う。『SP』ではこれらに加え、ジャンプやその場緊急回避によるキャンセルも可能。
殆どの溜めワザは、「溜めワザを使う」、「溜め動作中に攻撃を受けてふっとぶ」、「ミスをする」のいずれかの条件を満たすと溜めた分がゼロになる。
